The holiday and summer “Jam Week” camp program is by far our best. To have the opportunity to train your kids for 15 hours weekly allows us to maximize their potential and enhance their desire to play. The camp program is directed by Palm Beach Head Professional Dejan Minic who was the former coach of world’s # 1 doubles player Nenad Zimonjic and his top USPTA instructional staff. The camp is divided into levels of play based on age and experience to ensure all players are trained at their highest level possible. The camp also includes team and individual competitions that the kids are able to enjoy daily along with their training.

In the girls 10-and-under, Natasha Lomnitz finished first and Lillian Wytrzes second in the round-robin competition. Wyrtzes’s brother, William, came in first in the boys 10-and-under, with Ben Smith finishing as the runner-up.

Jackson continued his improving trend by turning the tables on Levine, his familiar counterpart in the boys 12s. Levine defeated Jackson 6-0, 6-0 last year, but Jackson came away with the championship Saturday, defeating Levine 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

“It was very nice improvement of Robbie Jackson,” town professional Dan Minic said.

Daniel Lomnitz defeated Alexander Morrison, 8-1, in the boys 12s consolation match.

In the girls 16s, Serena Ainslie finished as the champion with Charlotte Dowell second in the round-robin competition. Minic said Stephanie Knollenberg also did well in the girls 16s and was “a pleasant surprise,” beating Sloan Sambuco, who was a finalist last year.

Seventeen players competed — six more than last year — and eight of the juniors were in the 10-and-under category, which is getting a lot of attention these days with new U.S. Tennis Association rules that are aimed at getting the youths to learn the game easier and better.

Minic said the 10-under-program is fast-growing at Seaview as the juniors are starting to see the improvements of the new rules, which include smaller, lighter racquets; slower-moving, lower-bouncing balls; and smaller courts.

“We have a group of kids that like to compete and see the benefit of coming to our junior tournament,” Minic said. “They’re getting more familiar with the new rules, and you can see the benefits. All this really helps the kids improve and makes it fun for them. It was amazing to watch them and see how many times they got the ball over the net.”

The town will host its Holiday “Jam” Camp from Dec. 19-30 in two sessions from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. for players ages 4 to 16.

The next major event is the 10-and-under Seaview Junior QuickStart Tournament, set for Jan. 14.

Michael and Jonas Levine repeated as champions among the seven-team field as they defeated Carolyn Agresti Jackson and Robbie Jackson 6-3 in a well-played match.

“It was back and forth,” said Michael Levine, Jonas’ father. “It was another tough match.”

Jonas, 11, said the Jacksons are “real hard opponents. It was tough to get points.”

The Levines said they earned the victory by being more consistent, not hitting the ball as hard and keeping the ball in play.

An added twist to the final match Saturday was that it pitted doctor vs. doctor. Levine is an eye surgeon based in Boynton Beach, and Jackson is a president of Palm Beach Ear, Nose and Throat.

Town of Palm Beach professional Dan Minic remarked that “they’re not just doctors, they’re very good players.”

He said it was fun to watch the competitive match between the Levines and Jacksons and noted there’s not much difference in their skill levels.

Robbie Jackson, 10, said the Levines are “a very good team. They play well. I think I was just a little tired.”

Robbie’s mother, Carolyn, said these town tennis events “are our social time. I think it’s good for the town.”

Michael Levine said the day overall was a success as the town kicked off another season with another fine event.

“This is well appreciated and well organized,” he said. “It’s nice that they provide [refreshments]. Dan Minic is the key to the tournament’s success. He’s done a lot for this program.”

“It was nice. You had fun, and people were very happy,” Minic said. “It was beautiful for the families to spend time together.”

The next town tennis event is the monthly pro exhibition set for Nov. 4 at Seaview.

The first major tournament, set for Dec. 3-4, will be the Town of Palm Beach Junior Championships for boys and girls in the 10-, 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-and-under categories.

DEVELOPMENTAL
The Developmental program includes Young Stars (ages 4-6) and Futures (ages 7-9) and an ATP Challenger (ages 7-10) which utilizes a level appropriate “Quick Start” format for each class. Another Developmental program is ATP-Challenger (ages 7-10) designed for juniors slightly better than Juniors in the Futures but not yet ready for ATP.

* Young Stars: (Ages 4-6) Entry level, just starting to develop hand eye skills, loads of fun. We implement USTA Quick Start age appropriate methodology

High Performance
The High Performance program includes ATP I (ages 10-13), ATP II (ages 13-16), and Elite Junior program. ATP I and ATP II focus on technique, strategy, and training for competition. Elite program is developed for the competitive juniors and it is a combination of instruction, point situations – strategy, and fitness.

* ATP I: (Ages 10-12) Intermediate level, jrs with lesson experience just starting to play matches
