Duo rallies to win mixed-doubles title at Seaview Park Tennis Center

Sue Feldman and Bill Hancock showed the mark of champions Sunday by rallying to win the Town of Palm Beach Mixed Doubles Championships at Seaview Park Tennis Center. The duo teamed up to defeat Hilary Musser and Michael Idy, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to claim the last town title this season. “(Feldman and Hancock) made lots of mistakes and unforced errors, but they found a way to beat them,” town professional Dejan Minic said.

The teams reached the final after their strong performances in round-robin play Saturday. There were two groups of teams: one with four teams and the other with five. The mixed-doubles format, which pairs a male player with a female player, makes competitors go in with a specific strategy. “The ladies are the targets,” Minic said, “but they know how to handle themselves and how to play.”

With the last adult tournament completed for the season, all eyes now are on the juniors, who will compete in two U.S. Tennis Association tournaments in the next few weeks. The first is the USTA Local Junior Championships this weekend Saturday and Sunday for boys and girls in the 10s, 12s and 14s categories. The youngest players, the under 10s, will compete May 5 in the USTA QuickStart Junior Rookie Championships.

The Junior “Jam Week” program is a game based approach that adds excitement and enjoyment for the kids as they learn through a progression of drills and games specific for each of our levels of play.

Young Stars: (Ages 4-6) Entry level beginners. Just starting to develop hand/eye skills. Loads of fun.
Futures: (Ages 7-10) Advanced beginners. Juniors that have begun instruction but not yet playing.

HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Using the models of some of the most recognized international player development programs, we offer two weeks of intense game-based approach training sessions where all four components (mental-physical-tactical-technical) are being developed. Ratio 6/1

ATP: (Ages 11-15) Intermediate level. Juniors with lesson experience just starting to play match.
Elite: High Performance level. Juniors already competing in USTA tournaments.

Teams named after mayors compete in Saturday’s Centennial Championships

Who says age doesn’t matter? It certainly factored in Saturday at Seaview Park Tennis Center during the annual Centennial Championships, which pitted teams of players whose combined ages were at least 100. It was the second round-robin doubles event in as many weekends that mixed socializing with competition as the Palm Beach tennis program heads into the final stretch of the season. It was fun for the whole community,” said Diane Hofman, 84, who paired with Summer Curtiss, 24, as the event’s team with the oldest and youngest competitors. “It brings people together.”

Page Kjellstrom and Leslie Wytrzes were named the overall women’s champions, and Bruce Zeidel and Art Reiner the overall men’s champions. “It was a lot of fun because you get to play with people you don’t normally play with,” said Wytrzes, who is captain of the town’s Division I team. A handicap system was in place based on the teams’ combined ages: three points for 125-plus, two points for 120-plus, one point for 115-plus. The teams were categorized in four groups named after Palm Beach mayors. The teams in order of finish in each group:

Mayor Ilyinsky — Kjellstrom/Wytrzes, Robin Turner/Barbara Wilkinson, Hannah Ulrich/Tina Kopelman, Linda McDonald/Gail Lasser.

Mayor Smith — Vilma Horinkova, Hoffman/Curtiss, Diane Ward/Jackie Beckwith, Joan Coenen/Jane Scott.

Mayor McDonald — Zeidel/Reiner, Michael Coleman/Mike Reich, Troy Gustavson/Steve Seder.

Mayor Coniglio — Jerry Merga/Bill Paladino, Billy Carroll/Mike Mitson, Chuck Jones/Neil Aronstam.

In the Rough/Smooth a week earlier, Khooshe Aiken and Reich defeated Kristoff Gintowt and Curtiss in the main draw. Wilkinson and Mitson defeated Denise Trifiletti and Coleman in the consolation. Ulrich and Merga topped Turner and Carroll in reprieve, and Coenen and Homer Marshman beat Lasser and Paul Burness in last chance.

There are three more big events set through the beginning of May at Seaview: Town of Palm Beach Mixed Doubles Tournament (April 14-15), USTA Palm Beach Junior Championships (April 21-22) and USTA QuickStart Junior Rookie (May 5).

Curtis, Pruden crowned winners at Singles Championships at Seaview

By Joseph LucianoSunday’s men’s final of the Palm Beach Singles Championships at Seaview Park Tennis Center pitted two familiar faces while the women’s final allowed a new face to make her mark. The ladies got the day started with their championship, in which Summer Curtis defeated Anastasia Coleman 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. “Summer is a very solid player helping the Division A-1 team,” town professional Dejan Minic said. “She plays at a high level.” Curtis got to the final by defeating Jane Codman 6-1, 6-1 in a semifinal. Coleman defeated Hilary Musser 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal. In the women’s consolation, Angela Smith defeated Musser 4-3 when Musser had to quit the match because of an injury.Men’s action

Jeff Pruden defeated Mike Idy 6-1, 6-2 for the men’s title in a match Minic said put their mental skills to the test.
“Both showed an incredible variety of tennis,” Minic said. “It was a mind game. It was more than physical.”
Pruden advanced to the final with an 8-5 win over Michael Levine in the semifinal. Idy, an alumnus of Palm Beach Day Academy who is a financial adviser at UBS Financial Services on Royal Palm Way, upset second-seeded Lorne Abony 8-3 in the other semifinal. Mike Sheiner defeated Craig Smith, Angela Smith’s husband, 8-3 in the men’s consolation.

Upcoming events

The town professionals hosted their monthly exhibition Friday and will then gear up for the Junior Jam Camps during the weeks of March 11 and 18. The annual Rough-Smooth will be played March 24, and the town Centennial Championships, a doubles event in which each team’s ages must total 100 or more, is set for March 31.The town just got approval for both United States Tennis Association-sanctioned events it had planned to host. The Palm Beach Junior Championships (boys and girls local under 10, 12 and 14) will be played April 21-22, and the QuickStart Junior Rookie Championships (boys and girls under 10) is May 5.

Phipps tourney draws about 60 for tennis and camaraderie

By Joseph LucianoDaily News Sports EditorAbout 60 members of the Palm Beach community put their cares aside Friday at Phipps Ocean Park Tennis Center and took time to play tennis, laugh, socialize and eat what Roberta Mambrino considers to be the best hot dogs in town. It was all part of the 14th annual Citizens’ Association Tennis Tournament, organized by Mambrino. The event featured round-robin competition and a pro exhibition by town professional Dejan Minic and his assistants. “It was absolutely fabulous. In the long run, it worked out extremely well, and it was probably the best one since we started,” Mambrino said. “Everyone had a great time. There was a fabulous turnout.”

Mambrino said Friday’s event was a rare opportunity for camaraderie. “We were a community,” she said. “We talked, we laughed, we played. It was a thoroughly marvelous event. It was a total community event. We just had a great time. “We haven’t really had such camaraderie. They stay in their own little groups, but everyone was flocking to everyone and sitting down and relaxing and enjoying.” After the tennis was completed, participants dined on those great hot dogs with all the fixings and chips. Rugelach was served for dessert.

Several Palm Beach restaurants donated gift certificates that were raffled off. Former Mayor Jack McDonald won the gift certificate to Michael McCarty’s.
